In the current uncertain times, North Dakota farmers found comfort in the numbers and quality of crops.
From late August through September southwestern North Dakota farmers have seen the perfect warm weather for harvesting. Many farmers considered it one of the best harvest in years.
Producers had not only nice yields, but nice poundage as well. Most yields are between 40 and 60 bushels per acre with wheat.
Canola in the region also had high numbers, with reports of 2,000 to 2,800 per acre.
Although winter wheat harvesting is over, farmers are now working on the spring crops.

American Farm Bureau President Bob Stallman met with House and Senate agriculture committee leaders asking them to support a new aggressive trade agreement.
The trade agreement would export American goods to Colombia, Korea and Panama, bringing in $3 billion for the struggling agriculture industry.
“About 25 percent of the total volume of U.S. farm production is exported, and many U.S. commodities have a much higher dependence on trade,” Stallman said. “The positive impact of exports will be diminished as long as the United States is not moving forward with an agricultural trade agenda. The drop in U.S. agricultural exports from 2008 to 2009 is estimated to have cost roughly 160,000 American jobs in the production, processing and transportation sectors.”
Stallman also added that the agreement would help reach President Obama’s goal to double exports in the next five years.

Part of the 2008 Farm Bill pushes for farmers and producers to conserve their land for future generations. There are a number of programs available through the National Resource Conservation Service as well as the USDA.
However, there are also private, nonprofit organizations working for the same cause. The Western Reserve Land Conservancy is one of the leaders in the Midwest for land preservation.
Currently the organization, formed in 2006 by eight local land trusts, has preserved 333 properties covering 21,402 acres of land. This protects these acres from being used for anything other than agricultural purposes.
Two land owners have added 217 acres to the Western Reserve Land Conservatory this month in Ohio. 74 acres were added from Newbury township and 43 acres from Huntsburg township. The conservation is always looking for new members or additions.

In November Ohio voters passed Issue 2 which instates the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board (OLCSB). The OLCSB is working to create a set of standards for the treatment of livestock.
Currently the board is headed by producers (both produce and livestock), members of various farm organizations and the American Humane Society. However, the Humane Society is lobbying to have full control of decisions made by the board.
John C. Fisher, president of the Ohio Farm Bureau, said the lobbying is not a shock and that many expected the Humane Society to oppose.
“Ohioans are smart. They’ll see that HSUS’ latest tactic isn’t about reasonable animal care, it’s about power. Ohioans took control of the animal care issue, and HSUS doesn’t like it one bit,” Fisher said.
The OLCSB goes into effect this spring.

Beef, dairy and marketing officials are working closely to develop a plan to appease every industry affected by the new Livestock Identification Program.
The program is designed to trace animal borne diseases to their origins. Many felt the program would be too costly and difficult to maintain.
In December the Livestock Marketing Association submitted the 12 Principle Program to Congress.
The plan is designed to cost producers the least amount of money possible. It also states that the tagging should be done based on a specie to specie basis and should operate at the speed of commerce. For more details on the program click here.

Producers and organization representatives spoke in front of the Jefferson County Farm Bureau asking for USDA assistance sooner than later.
2009 was not an easy year for many farmers with abnormally cold weather and frequent heavy rains. Many fear that if USDA disaster and crop assistance is not handed out soon many farmers will have to call it quits.
The hardest part is that banks are working with farmers now to set up loans for the next year, but many farmers have an uncertain future.
Producers and officials are asking that the bureau support and push for the new legislation proposed to the House in mid-November that would disperse payments sooner than the normal May date.
Arkansas as a whole is expected to need $309 million in crop assistance.
